22 Jul A Packet of Biscuits a Day
I had a stressed client who was about 10-15 kgs over weight and just couldn’t shake it. Every morning she’d go for an early 3-5 kilometer walk. Breakfast was healthy … fruit for morning tea … salad for lunch … nuts for mid afternoon snack … come home from work and make a cup of tea and treat herself to a biscuit. And then something strange happened … before she realised the entire packet of biscuits had been devoured. She would go for a walk and then have a healthy dinner. This happened every day. And she just couldn’t stop it. I took her back to age 10 where she was living on a farm with her siblings and her widowed father (a strong disciplinarian). At that age if she didn’t eat her dinner she was forced to eat in the laundry … which was also where the pantry was. She would hide her dinner and would eat biscuits. To hide the evidence she would eat the whole packet.
It became a new habit that would raise its head when she was stressed. By gaining an understanding of the connection she was able to release the past and take control. We worked on the stress and she was able to simply disconnect from the biscuit eating behaviour. And of course the weight soon started coming off.
